A professional portrait from March 2026 showing a man in a black suit with dramatic backlight.
March 2026 has been a really busy month, so I decided to get all dressed up for a professional portrait to capture the moment. I am wearing a sharp black suit with a crisp white shirt and a dark tie, looking back over my shoulder with a serious and focused expression. The lighting in the room was amazing because it created a bright, warm glow right behind my head that makes the whole picture look like a scene from a movie. It feels great to swap my casual clothes for something more formal every once in a while, especially when the photo captures such a strong and confident vibe. I really like how the salt-and-pepper look in my hair and beard stands out against the dark suit in this shot.

To guarantee absolute consistency between our development, staging, and production environments, we have fully embraced Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform. There is no manual server configuration on this platform; every database instance, caching node, and API cluster is provisioned through declarative code. This, tied directly into our Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, allows us to deploy micro-updates to the app dozens of times a day with zero downtime. If a deployment fails an automated test, the pipeline instantly rolls back, ensuring platform stability and unmatched scalability as we prepare for user launch.

Data privacy and regulatory compliance dictate that we treat user data with the highest level of cryptographic security. While TLS 1.3 secures data in transit across our network, we have now fully enabled AES-256 encryption at rest for our entire database storage volume. Furthermore, highly sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is encrypted at the application level before it even touches the database, utilizing a secure Key Management Service (KMS) with automatic key rotation. If a physical drive were ever compromised, the data would remain mathematically unreadable ciphertext.

Synchronous processing is the enemy of web scale. If a user uploads a high-resolution image, we cannot make them wait for the server to generate thumbnails, extract metadata, and run AI moderation checks before returning a success response. We have integrated an asynchronous message broker architecture (using RabbitMQ). Now, the API immediately saves the raw file, drops an event payload into the message queue, and returns a 200 OK to the client. Background worker processes pick up these messages and process the heavy computational tasks independently. This decoupled queue system guarantees our web servers remain lightweight, responsive, and highly available.

Exposing our APIs to the public internet requires aggressive, multi-layered defensive measures. To protect against Layer 7 application attacks (like SQL injection and Cross-Site Scripting), we have deployed an intelligent Web Application Firewall (WAF) at our edge. Furthermore, to ensure app scalability and prevent volumetric DDoS attacks or brute-force bot scraping, we have implemented strict API rate limiting. Using a token-bucket algorithm tied to the user's JWT and IP address, we strictly throttle excessive requests, automatically returning 429 Too Many Requests errors to malicious actors before they ever reach our application servers.
Joseph Montes @jrm · Mar 19
Fetching a user's feed—complete with tags, media, author details, and like counts—is an expensive relational query. To achieve our goal of sub-100ms API response times, we cannot hit the SQL database for every page load. We have implemented a distributed, in-memory caching layer using Redis. When a feed is requested, the system first checks the Redis cache. If a cache miss occurs, it queries the database, formats the JSON payload, and stores it in Redis with a Time-To-Live (TTL) expiration. We employ an event-driven cache invalidation strategy so that when a new post is created, the specific cache keys are flushed, guaranteeing users see fresh content instantly.

As user acquisition models forecast rapid growth, a single master database will quickly become a CPU bottleneck. Today, we mapped out our horizontal scaling strategy. We are introducing read-replicas into our database cluster. All write operations (creating posts, adding likes, leaving comments) are routed to the primary Master node to ensure ACID transactional integrity. Simultaneously, the Master asynchronously replicates data to multiple Read nodes. Our API traffic is then load-balanced, directing heavy feed-fetch queries exclusively to the Read replicas. This separation of concerns allows us to scale read capacity infinitely without locking up our write threads.
Joseph Montes @jrm · Mar 19
Handling user-generated media introduces immense data complexities. Storing binary image data (BLOBs) directly in the SQL database is a critical anti-pattern that destroys I/O performance. Instead, our database simply stores metadata and pointers (URLs) to objects held in distributed cloud object storage. To ensure global scalability and low latency, we have integrated a Content Delivery Network (CDN) edge layer. When a user requests an image, the CDN routes the request to the geographic node closest to them, drastically reducing bandwidth costs on our origin servers and cutting image load times by over 80%.
Joseph Montes @jrm · Mar 19
Security is not an afterthought; it is our foundation. Today we finalized our authentication perimeter using a Zero Trust architecture. We are utilizing OAuth 2.0 coupled with JWT (JSON Web Tokens) for stateless, scalable session management. Instead of relying on traditional session state stored in the database, our API gateways validate the cryptographic signatures of incoming tokens. To mitigate token hijacking, we have implemented strict token lifespans (15 minutes for access tokens) alongside highly secure, HTTP-only refresh tokens. Every micro-interaction on the platform now requires cryptographically verified authorization.
Joseph Montes @jrm · Mar 19
Designing the schema for a high-volume social feed requires a delicate balance between normalization and read-performance. In a read-heavy system (where fetching the feed happens 100x more often than creating a post), over-normalized databases can lead to devastating JOIN penalties. We have strategically denormalized specific aggregate counts—such as storing TotalLikes on the Post table or using indexed views—to prevent massive aggregate recalculations on every page load. Furthermore, we implemented clustered indexes on our chronological sorting columns (CreatedAt) and non-clustered indexes covering our foreign keys (AuthorId, SiteId) to guarantee sub-millisecond seek times as our row counts push into the tens of millions.
Joseph Montes @jrm · Mar 19
As we kick off the core development of this platform, our first major milestone is defining the architectural vision. We have opted for a decoupled, API-first architecture rather than a traditional monolith. By separating the frontend presentation layer from our backend data services, we ensure that our mobile apps and web clients can consume the same RESTful endpoints. For data management, we are relying on a robust MSSQL relational backbone. While NoSQL has its merits for unstructured data, the strict ACID compliance, relational integrity of our Post-Tag-User matrices, and predictable indexing of SQL Server give us the foundational data consistency we need before we begin scaling horizontally.

A portrait of a man with a gray beard and his prom date from 1986 smiling together after 40 years.
I honestly cannot believe it has been 40 years since we went to our high school prom together back in 1986! We recently reconnected and took this picture to capture the special moment. We are both wearing casual black outfits, and she still has the exact same bright, beautiful smile that I remember from when we were just teenagers. It is so crazy how fast four whole decades can fly by, but catching up and sharing old high school memories after all this time has been absolutely wonderful. Time really does fly, but it is great to know that the best memories always stay with you.

A cyberpunk AI portrait of Joey Montes with neon lights, a digital visor, and glitchy error messages like SIMULATION_ERROR.
Here is another wild AI cover from Q Media, and this one went full cyberpunk with a really cool "access denied" theme! The computer generated this crazy picture of me wearing a dark hood with bright neon blue and purple lights glowing absolutely everywhere. I have on this high-tech digital visor, and the whole image is filled with glitchy effects and error messages like "SIMULATION_ERROR" and "USER_NULL" floating right next to my face. It looks exactly like a scene from a hacker movie or a futuristic video game where someone just got locked out of the main computer system. Playing around with these AI tools is so much fun because you never know when it will spit out something this intense and futuristic.

A dramatic, AI-generated portrait of Joey Montes wearing a dark hood with fiery orange and cool blue lighting.
Here is another awesome AI cover I did for Q Media, and this one gives off a serious fantasy movie vibe! I am wearing a dark, torn hood, and the lighting is perfectly split between a warm, fiery orange on one side and a cool, smoky blue on the other. You can even see little glowing sparks floating in the air right around my face while I stare seriously into the camera. It is completely crazy how these AI tools can take a normal picture and turn it into something that looks like it belongs on the front of a sci-fi novel. I really love playing around with these different artistic styles just to see what kind of intense scenes the computer comes up with next.

A dramatic, cinematic close-up of Joey Montes with snow and frost on his face for a Q Media cover.
I honestly cannot believe how incredible this new Q Media cover turned out! It is a super close-up shot of my face completely covered in freezing snow and ice, and it seriously looks like a poster for an intense winter survival movie. I am wearing a thick coat with a fur hood to fight off the cold, and the camera caught every single little detail of the frost on my skin and beard. The dark lighting makes my eyes look super focused and serious, giving the whole picture a really cool, dramatic vibe. It is always so much fun working on these artistic projects, and seeing the final result look this amazing just blows me away every single time.

Selfie of Joey Montes wearing a black beanie and leather jacket with beautiful snowy mountains in the background.
Here is a great selfie I took while spending some time out in the snowy mountains. I made sure to bundle up in my black leather jacket and a warm beanie to keep the freezing cold away while I explored. The view right behind me was absolutely amazing, with all those huge snow-covered peaks stretching out as far as you can see. It was such a beautiful, clear winter day to be outside taking pictures and just enjoying nature. Taking a trip up to the mountains is always a perfect way to clear my head and take in some fresh, crisp air.

A young Joey Montes holding his little son Ryan on Christmas Eve in Plano, Texas in 1999.
Here is a really special picture of me and my son Ryan from way back on Christmas Eve in 1999. We were celebrating the holidays at our home in Plano, Texas, right before the start of the new millennium. I was holding him close while wearing a grey shirt, and he looked so cute in his little yellow turtleneck sweater. You can even see some framed family photos sitting on the wooden cabinet right behind us. It is crazy to think about how fast time goes by, but looking at this old picture always brings back wonderful memories of when he was just a little guy.

We made sure to save these two great photos for the very end of our Wildwood series! First, we decided to match up with a sleek, simple black on black look that felt a little bit dressier. Then, for the final shot, we went right back to the style that started it all with my denim jacket and her turtleneck. It has been so awesome seeing these everyday moments of us at home reimagined into such cool art.

Reimagined portrait of Dawne in a white gown and Joey Montes in a tuxedo, posing like characters in a James Bond movie.
We decided to fully channel our inner 007 for this fun picture! This reimagined photo puts Dawne and me right in the middle of a classic James Bond movie scene. I am rocking a sharp tuxedo, and Dawne looks absolutely stunning in her elegant white gown. It is definitely a whole lot fancier than our usual Friday nights at home, but it is always fun to pretend to be international spies for a minute!
